This month's CCM features one of the last works of Irving Fine, one of the great American composers of the 20th century. It is possible that Fine is not as well-known now as he was in mid-century because of his relatively small output, surely at least partially a result of his appallingly early death. No matter, what he did leave behind are a collection of finely crafted (pardon the pun), warm, intelligent works. Though his vocal works are still performed fairly regularly -- and the bulk of his output is for voices -- his five works for orchestra (Toccata concertante, 1947; Serious Song, 1955; Blue Towers, 1959; Diversions, 1959-60; and the Symphony, 1962) are all charming. If you get a chance to see any of them performed live, jump at the opportunity. |
